This summer we stayed at Hotel Poco A Poco in Monteverde, Costa Rica.
Monteverde is more of a backpackers stop than a luxury resort and the accommodation and town reflected this. However, it’s quirky nature had a certain charm.
We had booked two rooms at Hotel Poco a Poco and on arrival they apologised that they were unable to put us next to each other but we were on the same floor. This was fine and is just one of the issues you face travelling as a family of 5. The rooms at Poco A Poco were basic but comfortable.
There was a swimming pool at the hotel, but it was even too cold for my boys! (They rarely feel the cold.) But there was a Jacuzzi which made up for it and was a much nicer temperature.
We visited Hotel Poco a Poco in August (low or green season.) It was much cooler in Monteverde than the warmth of La Fortuna. There was a balcony in each room which meant you could stand out in the low cloud when it came down! It was quite interesting watching the cloud slowly creep down.
This cooler weather meant that it was great to do activities such as horseriding. The hotel reception were very helpful with booking tours, recommending trips that would suit a family like ours. In low season most tours can be booked to do a few hours later.
Breakfast at the hotel was included in our package and was nice. It was not a buffet but there was plenty to choose from off the menu. The boys enjoyed their waffles and I sampled their traditional Costa Rican breakfast with black beans, plantain, cheese and tortilla.
We also ate in their restaurant in the evening with a guitarist playing. Again the food was good and as a hotel guest there was a discount if you pre booked a table.
Our stop in Monteverde was only two nights and the hotel met our needs for our stay. It was really nice that you could walk into the town where there were bars, restaurants and a supermarket. If you are staying here I would recommend a drink in the quirky tree house restaurant. And who can’t fall in love with a place where you see road signs like this!
