It certainly does with me. As you may know, I am a self confessed hoarder with a hoarder husband and three hoarding children. I am trying my best to change things.
Clearabee are an on-demand rubbish removal company and they have conducted research through Populus which has revealed that 8 out of 10 families hang on to items considered as junk. This represents 6% of the floor space in a modern 3 bed-roomed house.
Old clothes, books and magazines, and toys were most frequently cited as examples of junk stashed away by families. I am guilty on all counts here. Especially when it comes to the children's clothes.
So where do we hide them? Well the survey says everywhere! Lofts are the most likely place and I would have to agree. But sheds, garages and under stairs cupboards are all filled with junk too.
Rob Linton who is the operations director at Clearbee states that " In a nation where space is at a premium, it is staggering that almost one in three families are storing enough useless junk to fill an entire room. The cost in terms of lost property space is not fat off £10,000 per family."
I know for one that getting rid of the junk can be really hard. I attach emotions to objects which is why I struggle letting go. However, as I am continuing with my decluttering I am feeling so much happier. And guess what, I haven't missed any on the junk so far.
Not everyone can do the process themselves though and firms like Clearabee can help. In a matter of hours they can remove the junk and ensure it is recycled and disposed of properly.
Are you a hoarder? Do you have lots of wasted space due to keeping junk? Have you decluttered and feel better for it?

I am a real hoarder. I have such sentimental attachment to silly things. When i watch those hoarding programmes i can see how it could so easily be me that could become like that so i have to really keep myself in check. x
ReplyDeleteI cannot hoard. Clutter bothers me and I always feel like I can think better and get things done more effectively when everywhere is clear and rubbish free! I de-clutter a few times each year, though you have now got me thinking that I haven't given the kitchen a good go for a while...one for the weekend! x
ReplyDeleteMe too! It is so hard isn't it. I must admit that those programs help as well as going to other peoples houses that are worse hoarders than me. I will get there with it!
ReplyDeletelol, it does need doing regularly to keep on top of it doesn't it. I am slowly getting there, but I cant believe how long it takes. I hate making decisions over the boys stuff, but if I didn't they would keep everything!
ReplyDeleteI am not a hoarder and have regular clear-outs! I hate clutter!
ReplyDeleteI have a regular de-clutter to make space
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not, I like space can't do clutter my Dad and sister collect so much, but I'm a little bit wobbly on my legs so very clumsy and need the space!
ReplyDeleteI am a bit of a hoarder tbh but it's because the things I have I value, that's my excuse and i'm sticking with it but i cannot bear to throw out my stuff just because all homes should look like showhomes lol
ReplyDeleteNo, I may hold on to things for a short time but then I have a good clear out and throw it all away. Hubby is a terrible hoarder though and it drives me mad! x
ReplyDeletewe are hoarders but we hate clutter, so we are very tidy, all our rooms are as minimal as possible, but don't ever open a cupboard or drawer!
ReplyDeleteI totally understand how hoarders get into such bad situations For example, when the post comes, I'll either keep the envelope's, if I think they can be reused, or if they are important I think ; better keep it, I might need it one day. Before I know it there's stuff everywhere/
ReplyDeleteI'm a hoarder too it's hard to know what to get rid off
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit of a hoarder, but not as much as my partner, 'that might come in useful one day' seems to be his catchphrase!
ReplyDeleteNo I have regular clear outs
ReplyDeleteyes, my husband says I see a flat surface and put things on it and leave them there
ReplyDeletei am not really an order and have to have regular clear out or i get panicky
ReplyDeleteno not at all
ReplyDeleteI have so much stuff, that I have never thrown away just in case I need it in the future, in the cupboard under the stairs I still have two boxes that were never unpacked after I moved to this house... 10 years ago! what I should do is just throw them out without looking at whats inside but I just cant seem to make myself!
ReplyDeleteOne of the good things about hubby being in the army is that we have a good clear out every time we move.
ReplyDeleteHave regular clear outs
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty good at being organised and having a clear out twice a year.
ReplyDeletei have regular clear outs and my motto is 'if its not been used for a year it has to go'
ReplyDeleteI dont clear out .I have a shed full ,cupboards full, drawers full and stuff in the loft- oh dear
ReplyDeleteI have to have one ruthless clear up a year in my house!
ReplyDeleteNo, I am definitely not a hoarder in fact i am the exact opposite. I hate clutter.
ReplyDeleteI am such a horder I keep promising a good clear out but just never get round to it
ReplyDeletei'm not - my girlfriend sarah is. She will complain when I put too much stuff in the living room cupboard when she has EVERY other bit of storage in the house.
ReplyDeleteI am always decluttering especially the kids toys, but then in no time at all more stuff seems to accumulate!
ReplyDeleteOh god yes... I have a "I have to keep this it might become useful" mentality... One of the many traits I inherited from my dad
ReplyDeleteI have down sized twice in the last few years so have had to get rid of an awful lot of stuff. I would have loved to have kept more for sentimental reasons even if some people considered it junk.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a hoarder - my bedroom looked like something off a cable channel - couldnt see the floor, everything was packed full of stuff. Then I got a job abroad for a year - before I went I had to sort through everything and only keep the essentials. A year spent sharing a room with another person and a shared wardrobe and I learned how to stream line my belongings, since coming back I have kept it up and every 3-4 months I have a sort out - I give stuff away on freecycle, to charity and sell it on ebay and gum tree - I cant believe how I used to live
ReplyDeleteI am a little hoarder but hate throwing things away
ReplyDeleteI hoard clothes!
ReplyDeleteI feel like a hoarder who's kind of got it under control! I have a 3 monthly clear out xx
ReplyDeleteI am a hoarder, I am trying though and I am slowly getting rid of some stuff
ReplyDeleteI think I'm a bit of a hoarder I get it from my nan bless her lol xx
ReplyDeleteI am slowly getting there but doing it for 4 others makes it even harder!
