When it comes to the school holidays I love to treat the boys and what better than with cake! Mr Kipling have challenged bloggers to share how the holidays can be better with cake and it got me thinking about how cake can cheer us up on the school holidays.
Making Cake.
My boys love baking and as it has been Easter then we had to make some chocolate nests. We just melted some Easter eggs, added Rice Krispies and some chocolate eggs. Messy but fun!
A Teddy Bears Picnic.
Even big man is happy to play along with this idea. Setting out an afternoon tea with the soft toys makes the boys happy especially as they know it is not just the teddies (or no necked giraffes) that will get to enjoy it.
Making a Pudding.
This is an activity that I used to do at Guides and my boys always enjoy this. Get some cake, jelly, squirty cream, custard and sprinkles and let the kids get creative and make their own desserts.
Decorating Cakes.
Ok, this is bakewell tart, but big man enjoyed icing a face on it all the same. Buy some tubes of icing and decorations and the children will happily decorate themselves a treat.
Go on a Picnic.
If the weather is bright then a picnic in the park is always fun. I love these individual packs to take on a day out. If the weather is rubbish we sometimes put the pop up tent in the garden and have it there instead.
Film and cake.
If all else fails then why not put on a film, enjoy the piece and quiet. If you are anything like me, enjoy a fondant fancy and a strong coffee!
Do you find the school holidays are better with cake? What do you do?

ReplyDeleteI have to say Dominic and Lydia love baking and cooking generally but cakes and buns are definitely their fave things to make, anything where they get to control the decorating or even some of the ingredients like with muffins and buns. They love to draw faces or just pile every imaginable decoration onto a cake. If it's for grandad then they've even been known to use liquorice and toffees! They also like making flans using ready made sponge flan dishes, this is great because they add chopped fruit, berries etc and their fave jelly. It's definitely fun, can definitely be messy but most importantly gets a lot of giggles and they are so proud when they've finished!
ReplyDeleteI love making decorated cup cakes with the kids

ReplyDeleteDefinitely better with cake, Baking is a great way to teach kids and spend some quality time together, whilst making them then enjoying them, whether it's on the sofa watching movies or a picnic in the garden =D
ReplyDeleteMy boys and I would agree that everything is better with cake too. We do have some disagreements when it comes to baking though, mostly about the amount of icing and cake decorations that are required!
